I was feeding my two beautiful cats with Meow Mix. I decided to change them over to Purina Indoor cat (they were getting a little hefty). Within a day of giving it to them, they started vomiting up all the food. When they had nothing else to vomit, they threw up brown liquid, with streams of a more solid liquid mixed in. They stopped eating. They'd walk up to their food bowls, and start crying (even though there was food in the bowls). I stopped giving them the food, and now they're getting better. I've decided to feed my cats and new puppy a raw diet, as nature intended. At least I know what's going into their body.

In late August 2011, one of my cats developed a saddle thrombosis. He was hospitalized and improved and was sent home. He regained total use of his rear legs which had been paralyzed. When at the vet, x-rays showed no enlargement of the heart. While he was recuperating, he would eat nothing but cooked chicken liver and baby food. As he regained strength, he resumed eating his regular diet, Purina Indoor Formula (purchased at Wal-Mart).
In late October, he again suffered another embol. He did not regain total use of his legs. Around the beginning of November, my other male cat Franklin suffered the exact same symptoms. He did not recover the use of his back legs. After a week at the vets, he returned home and grew worse. It was heartbreaking. Around this time Ernie began to projectile vomit blood and defecates and urinate blood. He had been eating Purina as had Frank. He was rushed to the vet where he died. Two days later Frank began to vomit, urinate and defecate blood. He was rushed to the vet where it was also determined that he was in renal failure and his breathing was compromised. It was later discovered that he was bleeding from all of his major organs and was in complete system failure. I was with him when the vet put him down.
Both of these cats were completely healthy 6 year old animals with no history of illness. I had Franklin autopsied upon the recommendation of my vet and the conclusion was as I stated - however the necropsy revealed no evidence of the usual heart enlargement or malformation of the inner heart chambers usually accompanying this type of illness. I contacted Purina when Frank first became sick and they gave me a claim number. I sent them the autopsy report and the vet findings as well as the bills for both cats - $3,000 plus some change.
As of this writing, the attorney for Nestle Purina Pet Care has stated that "the food did not cause the death of the cats." Purina has never requested samples of the food. I still have the bag. Has anyone else feeding their cats or dogs Purina products experienced these symptoms and fatalities? The legal department offered me $750 with the caveat that I waive all of my rights to pursue this claim, either personally or in class action. I am refusing the money (it's not about that) and I will wait to hear from them before I take further action. This has been devastating.

It's very interesting. My dog is currently at the vet, in bad condition. I have been there for days now. This is his third admission for treatment in 2 weeks. Severe vomiting, which then lead to vomiting of blood, then heavier vomiting of blood. At first, we couldn't figure out why he was sick. He would go into the vet vomiting blood, they would stabilize him, keep him for a few days (feeding him a bland prescription diet), he would come home acting fine, and he would eat his usual dinner, then wake up in the middle of the night violently ill again. He also has diarrhea. He went back to the Animal Hospital, where he was stabilized, and kept for a few days for observation, and treated for dehydration.
So, when we brought him home a second time, we kept him on the bland diet that the vet had been giving him, just until his stomach got back to normal (still not making the connection that it could be his food). He had no more vomiting or diarrhea. After a few days, we put him back on his regular food. By morning, he had the same symptoms! This time there was a lot of blood. I rushed him to the vet, where he was stabilized again. He is still there. I started to wonder if it could be the food I was giving him. I have used it for 2 years, and have never had a problem. So, I did some research (you should too!). There are hundreds of pet owners with the same story. Many have died. Mine may too, not to mention the vet bills that I have accumulated so far. I have sent the dog food to the vet, to be sent to a lab for testing. There are tiny white specs on the dry food. My vet is suspicious. I will let you know her findings.
Many owners have contacted Purina to let them know of this problem. So, why is it still on the shelves? If the results are what my vet thinks they are going to be (I should know tomorrow), I am going to contact my local news station, and make sure people stop buying these products. I buy the Purina Smart Blend Lamb and Rice Dry Food, and mix it with Beneful Wet Food (usually the beef stew flavor). I couldn't see anything in the wet food, but I sent that for testing as well. I do not intend to be quiet about this.

I have eight cats and last Xmas someone dropped off a bag of dry food. Two of my cats open the bag without me knowing it and for days I keep seeing bloody diarrhea in the cat box. I found the bag opened and start my research. I found the product UPC listed as a recall on the FDA. I kept the bag in the trunk of my car. The diarrhea stopped. Then I thought maybe it's only certain products, so I thought I get a small of bag of Kaboodle (7 lbs.). My kitties were all in front of me while I opened the bag and soon enough after about 20 minutes, all of them are throwing up and an hour later the 3 cat box are filled with diarrhea. In about an hour I again look up the UPC; it's from the same lot. I got very dizzy and nauseated myself.
The first time I know it was on recall but did not specify why. This time the press release said due to Salmonella contamination. I was so nauseated myself but I cleaned up everything that I touched with it. Soak everything in Clorox. I called Purina and I was told that the UPC is not on recall list but it is from the same lot since the first 5 numbers are the same. I am convinced that everything of Purina products must be contaminated. In order to eliminate the Salmonella virus, which can be in the air, it has to be vacated and decontamination takes days if not weeks. I have not returned all samples as I am going to test them myself. I have not feed them since then with anything Purina and no diarrhea anymore. I became very vigilant after the first scenario. It's in my house for about an hour and the damage to my cats and me was horrifying. Imagine if it's left there for days. Something got to be done to stop the poison from circulating. The UPC starts 17800. That is the lot number. Repeat: decontamination takes days in order to get rid of the virus, which means the Purina plant must be shut down at about the same amount of time.

Go to the press against this huge corporation, and stand together to protect our pets! We have been feeding our pet with Purina for years. We bought a new bag, and our dogs became extremely ill. Projectile vomiting, black diarrhea, lethargy, and clamminess are the symptoms. We have four dogs, one of which (our 7 year old healthy plug) we had to rush to the vet's ER. She stayed overnight.
The vet called this morning to say she passed away. There is nothing else that could have caused this. They are always inside, and they don't run about. They are always supervised in a fenced in yard. All of them are of perfect health, until we purchased the new bag of Purina Little Bites this past week. We have contacted the news. We are going to picket in their parking lots. Please help before more animals die!

I just wanted to do a follow up about my dog that became extremely ill after eating Purina One Smart Blend (as noted in my prior email). I did call Purina to notify them. They said they would look into the product. I am not a Purina basher as I have never had a problem with any of their food in the past. My father worked for Nestle and owns stock in the company.
But there is a problem with the recent batch of Food. My dog had not been out of the yard. The only difference was this brand new bag of Purina. I had test run on my dog at the animal emergency clinic. There were no blockages and all of his tests for parasites came back normal. 4 days later, he is doing better with all his meds (flagel, pro pectian). I have read about more problems in the recent post here and on several dog list. Please notify any other people you know that feed Purina One there may be a problem and to watch their dogs. Please take your dog to the vet ASAP if they are experiencing any problems. I am confident Purina will address this, but we don't need any more of our beloved friends getting ill until this is sorted out.

Purina One Smartblend Chicken and Rice: Alerts to all the posters with issues regarding their dogs and this product. I just lost my beautiful, healthy vibrant, 16 week old Australian Shepherd after feeding her this dog food from a 34# bag purchased from PetSmart in Nashville, TN on January 4, 2012.
Cheyenne just quit playing, started lying around then she started with vomiting, then the bloody diarrhea. I took her to the Vets and they dewormed her and gave her sulfa but that was the day her eyes became terribly bloodshot. Back the next day, ran a CBC, did not see too much but noticed an eye hemorrhage. They assumed D-Con (none anywhere on our property and she was never off), gave her some IV fluids, started her on Vitamin K and and antibiotic. By Monday, she had deteriorated but the Vet was now perplexed as her chemistry showed Renal Failure. After $500 more in meds and IV's they sent her home to die. She died at home in our arms after 5 agonizing days of suffering, seeing two Vets and consulting with an internal medicine Vet.
She was my 20-year-old daughter's baby girl and we are all devastated. We had an autopsy (necropsy) performed and the results are: "Renal failure with hyperkalemia, suspected Vitamin D". Vitamin D can be formulated incorrectly when added to the dog food formula causing hyperkalemia and subsequent renal and total organ failure and hemorrhage. Vitamin D is also used as a rodenticide "Vitamin D Rodenticide" which causes renal and organ failure and hemorrhage. The lab where she was autopsied does not have the toxicology abilities to specifically test for these toxins. The animal pathologist made the determination by the physical results of her organs.
I asked the Vet and the Pathologist if it could be the dog food, they both said we'd see more of this in other dogs. Then I googled the info and end up here this morning. I spoke with Purina today and the rep carefully took my information. I informed her I had no intention of letting this go so I expect a return call from Purina. I have contacted the TN Department of Agriculture and I will meet with an investigator on Monday. Please contact me if you have been affected by this dog food as I believe we can have more impact in numbers and I would like to see if there is a regional pattern to this. I am sorry I don't have the UPC numbers with me to post here. I have fed my dogs Purina One for 5 years without issue. This is a bad batch of food and Purina needs to step up, admit it and recall it before it causes more people and pet's heartbreak and death.

I have had my dogs on Purina One for years. I bought a bag in early January, and my 4 month old puppy started acting tired. I took her to the vets a week later with diarrhea. To make the long story short, we lost that puppy 5 days later, because three vets could not diagnose her. We had a necropsy (autopsy) performed, and it points to "calcification of vital organs with kidney lesions commonly seen in high doses of Vitamin D". This was a puppy never out of our fenced yard/house. I have nothing in my house to answer this. I believe this dog food is involved. I feed her several cans of Purina One mixed with hers, because she didn't like dry. I am contacting Purina, and someone is going to listen to me!

About 10 days ago, I got a bag of Purina One Smart Blend from Wal-Mart. I fed it to my dog. Within hours, the dog was very sick, vomiting, puking and very lethargic. The dog would not eat or drink. After two days, off to the vet. Vet drew a CBC which revealed an elevated white count. Dog placed on meds. Four days of treatment, the poor little guy was improving.
During treatment, I was feeding him rice cereal and boiled chicken. After he finished his course of medications, he was about 80% back to normal. Today, I decided to feed him some of the Purina which he ate little of. Six hours later back to the runs and puking. Purina has a problem with their product.

I just bought a bag of Purina One Chicken and Rice on Jan. 28th 2012. I feed it on occasion, when I am out of my regular food and need to pick something up at the grocery store. I never had any problems prior. My dog ate it Sunday and got up in the night with diarrhea. This afternoon, I noticed him staining and some blood. He seemed very lethargic, so I watched him and fed him a little pumpkin and rice. I went with a flashlight to watch him do his business and he is bleeding a lot from the rectum tonight! I just called the ER vet.
They asked if he had eaten anything different and I just said Purina One. I decided to see if there was any recall and got this page came up and now I'm very worried. We are on our way to the ER vet now! Very upsetting as we are on our way to Westminster in a week! I hope this isn't the food for everyone in America's sake! If there is a problem, I am begging Purina to please recall if there is a problem!

I found a website online & discovered that people have been having all kinds of severe health problems, even deaths with this product. Our terrier mix has been on Purina Dog Chow since he was born. He is now 9 and in the last three days, he has had uncontrollable diarrhea. He can barely stay indoors (slightly problematic given that it is winter! ) without pooping everywhere. He has never been like this. Thinking back, the only thing that changed was buying/ opening/ using the new bulk bag of Dog Chow from Sam's Club.
It isn't expired (in fact, manufacturing date is 12/25/11) and expires in June 2013! I am staring at the dog food now waiting for something to crawl around, but so far, nothing, but I am convinced it is the dog food. Nothing else has changed! Dog is off to vet this evening, and I'll be calling Purina in the morning. I will deliver the whole bag to them personally if need be since I live in St. Louis! And I want reimbursement for my upcoming vet bill! I'm not sure what went wrong, but wish that they would recall it before it is too late for some pets! Hoping it isn't for mine!

For the past 9 years, my 4 cats ranging in ages have only eaten Fancy Feast can cat food. Summer of 2011, all my cats were hospitalized; two diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (one is 8 and the other 14). My other kitty had a serious kidney infection and endoscopy also showed us that she has gastritis of her stomach and an ulcer of her duodenum. She is 8. My fourth cat has a recurring UTI, she is 11. For about a year, they were finicky with their food. But since September of 2011, they have been getting sick on some of the flavors. Now, they get sick on all flavors or turn their noses up at all the flavors. They refused to eat a food they have loved and devoured for years! Purina has killed my dog with their contaminated food. My dog "Duchess" who was perfectly healthy and happy suddenly became violently ill and died after suffering a very traumatic and violent death. As soon as we saw that something was wrong, we rushed her in but there was nothing the vets could do for her and we lost her. We are devastated. She suffered greatly and we were so helpless.
This is a criminal act on Purina's part and they need to be held accountable. I don't want the price of the dog food refunded to me! I don't care how nice they are when you call them! They should have yanked this poison off the market! Duchess was not a piece of property. She was a part of our family. We decided to try the Purina One Smartblend Lamb & Rice formula dog food for our two labs. Within a few days, they started vomiting and having diarrhea. The only thing that had changed was the food. We had diligently mixed it with their former food, so I knew that it was more than just "new food adjustment". Our labs are from the same litter, but one is smaller than the other. He is now having difficulty walking, shaking, and unable to control his bowels. We have switched them back to their old food and will be calling the vet in the morning (or sooner if he worsens). Concerned, we began looking online for any type of recall on this food and instead found the numerous other pet owner's similar experiences with the Smartblend brand of products.
This goes beyond belief that Purina isn't doing anything about this problem. I just hope our lab is going to be okay. He is moaning and perfectly miserable right now.

I raised my other first doxy on Purina One because I believed it to be the best dog food. So naturally I put my current doxy on Purina One. It has something in the mix. I believe it to be the chicken fat sprayed on the kibble. He loved it. But, he has ear infections, itchy skin, chronic urinary tract infection.
I started feeding him canned dog food to help with the UTI, after a lot of reading about it, to increase his water intake, he mostly eats that, but yesterday he had to eat Purina One kibble because he was still hungry. He became so itchy after he ate it. Now I have to search for a new dog food, and if I could afford it, I'd get him Orijen. The vet said to put him on Hill's prescription diet but it has grain as the first ingredient and my dog doesn't like it.
He has to starve before he finally eats it, I switched because of the UTI, last time, but as soon as it cleared up, I switched him back to Purina One, believing that it was a number 1 brand to feed him. Well, now I know, it made him sick. I contacted Purina to tell them, and they said for me to try another brand.

This past weekend I bought my 12-week old Australian Shepard a small bag of Puppy Chow. I had never used Purina products before (he's been eating Nutro Max) and began to slowly introduce the Puppy Chow to him today. I did about 25% Puppy Chow and 75% Nutro Max. He was perfectly healthy. When I woke him up, he went outside and did his business (which was normal) and then came in to eat. Within 30-45 minutes of eating he had severe diarrhea followed 30 minutes later with excessive vomiting. I thought it might simply be the change in food (sometimes puppies' tummies can be sensitive) but it has continued to get worse throughout the day. After reading the complaints here I'm certain that it was the Puppy Chow that made him sick. I have a vet's appointment tomorrow morning. I hope he'll be okay. I contacted Purina via e-mail and have not received a response; however, if I don't hear back from them in the next day I will be calling them.

We Purchased a large bag of Purina Smartblend to feed our dogs and soon found our rat terrier with diarrhea and vomiting. We immediately took her to the vet. After getting back and inspecting the food, there were larvae and white larvae "homes", and a type of small beetle or wheat bug consistently throughout the food. The next day, our younger dog, a Shiba Inu, presented with severe belly pain, whimpering to the touch and walking with his back arched and legs straightened as if it was painful to walk. Immediately, we took him to the vet also. My fiancee is currently there now as I write this. I documented the infestation with pictures and photos. I'm collecting a sample of the food and bugs, and freezing them.

I noticed recently that Friskies canned cat food 5.5oz can, which I buy by the case, are all under-filled ranging from 4.9 to 5.1oz per can. The 13oz can I weighted was also under-filled. I've also random weighted same product from other stores and they too were under-filled. My scale is calibrated and the net weight of other canned foods are accurate so I know it's not my scale. I have notified Ralston-Purina by email. They expressed concern and possible causes but nothing about how/if/when they plan to rectify the under-fill. They did send me some coupons but that's not what I was looking for. Am I the only one that has noticed this or is it common practice? If so, consumers should know that they are not getting their money's worth.

My dog has been eating Purina One Chicken and Rice since we got him about a year and a half ago, when he was two years old. Upon opening a brand new bag last week, he began vomiting every time he ate and would go two days without touching his food. We were very concerned about his health and before we took him to the vet, we looked online to see if we could find anything about a possible food recall and instead we found this! We immediately bought a more expensive, organic food (Nature's Variety from Petland) and tried it with our dog.
He is eating regularly and back to his old self. We checked the bag of Purina but did not see anything visibly wrong with it. However, I truly believe that the food was the cause. I spoke with Purina and she refunded the money of the dog food without questions (probably because they deal with this often). I will tell everyone I know about this experience and encourage them not to buy Purina products. We are so happy to have our dog healthy again.

We too have had a sick kitty, diagnosed with kidney disease. He's only six years old! It's basically the same story as everyone else on this website, no apparent health problems ever. We fed him Purina Kit & Kaboodle. He was running around healthy one day, and then the next day he was lethargic and throwing up. I called the 1-800 number for Purina and reported this incident and was told that their food is tested on a regular basis and there are no current recalls for this food.
I told them I wanted to report this as I don't want anyone else to have to go through what we have this week. My children and I had to make the decision to put kitty to sleep last night. His kidneys weren't ever going to work on their own again. My sister told me her cat is now doing the same thing after eating Purina One cat food. What is happening? On January 3rd, my 5 year old Scottish terrier started getting sick. First, she was shivering at night and was less active for a few days. She became lethargic, was vomiting and had diarrhea. She stopped eating and drinking. She would not play or wag her tail and became disturbingly weak. We took her to the vet who said she was experiencing acute kidney failure. After three days of inpatient treatment, the doctor let her come home with us to die peacefully and comfortably. The vet thought she had cancer, then thought she had Addison's disease, now she has no idea what brought on her sudden illness.
She's been eating Purina Chow her entire life without any adverse symptoms. The bag she had been eating out of was Purina Dog Chow purchased from Wal-Mart, expiration date of May 2013. There isn't anything visibly wrong with it, unlike how others had been posting.
Since she's been home, she's begun to eat and drink again, a little at a time. We had been feeding her a mix of Hills Prescription food and Gerber baby food and her condition improved almost immediately. Upon reintroduction to the Purina, she had a setback and was vomiting until there was only bile left.
I am hopeful that switching brands will help her continue to heal.

I've been feeding Purina One for 8 years. The last bag was purchased from PetSmart, a 34 pound bag. It had tan/cream colored bug looking shells in it. I did not think much until all 4 dogs got lethargic and pukey. I looked up "white specks in Purina One" and found this site. Hope our 4 dogs are okay. I will be purchasing new food tomorrow, back to pricier food! I always thought Purina One was okay for the cost as feeding 4 large dogs can get expensive! I will also call Purina in the morning.

I had written early about our dogs getting ill after eating Purina pet food. Our cats were also eating it. Both cats and both dogs stopped eating the food on their own. They refused after the first few days on it. Our puppy became ill as did our older dog. They were vomiting, had diarrhea, extended stomach, no appetite, excessive panting, and were drinking large amounts of water. After changing foods, the puppy and cats began eating again after a few days. Unfortunately, we had to put Jack, our 16 year old Jack Russell, down. He was in so much pain and wasn't recovering. His liver and pancreatic enzymes were elevated beyond belief. His stomach was hard as a rock and was vomiting a yellowish foamy fluid. He was urinating and defecating in the house which he hadn't done since he was a puppy!
You could just see how awful he felt and how much pain he was in. We had no choice but to do the right thing for him and put him down and that broke my heart like nothing ever has. I will never feed another pet Purina again in my life and I will tell my story to every person who will listen! He may have been 16 but he was healthy and active until he ate that food. My mom's dog visited during the time they were eating Purina and her dog began vomiting. But it went away after a few days of her being back home eating her own food. My sister's dogs were eating Purina and had diarrhea during this same time period.

Okay, this is about Pedigree large breed dog food my German shepherd has been on it since he was a puppy. He kept getting violently ill with the ** and vomiting. He got so sick at one point, he refused to eat or drink for 3 days until he was taken to the vet for rehydration and he had to stay overnight and could have died. When I switched his food, it all stopped. Well I switched him to Ol'roy and now he won't stop farting but it could be the Alpo treats I switched him to. But whatever the point is, this brand of dog food would have killed my dog. I will never buy Purina or Pedigree dog food again. I'm not risking my dog's life.

I've fed my dog Purina Lamb and Rice his whole life (13 years). And just the past few weeks, he began throwing up bile and hacking and refusing to touch the dog food. I figured his throat was sore, so I switched to soft canned food and he ate it up and began to get better. Then a few days ago, I switched him back to the old lamb and rice food again, and he began puking. This morning it was yellowish with traces of blood. I'm convinced now it was the food.

Where are all of you buying your pet food. It is the store's responsibility to replace expired pet food but you should check as well like I do. I buy at Wal-Mart.I have two big huskies and a Labrador as well and a year-old cat and couldn't get them to eat enough food to keep them healthy. My sister told me about Purina One, so I bought a bag last week as well as a bag of Purina One cat food because it seemed Coty, my year-old cat, would poop more than she ate. I tried Purina One and the majority of food stays in their bodies and poop is less. My 2 huskies love this food and eat all of it. I have no issues with Purina dog or cat food.
My cat is finally gaining weight and my dogs are satisfied and they don't act like they are starving anymore. I noticed the difference right away with my cat, I found her in my yard as a kitten and kept her. My dogs are new at eating it and have been eating it for a week three times a day and food stays in their bodies and they don't poop it all out. They are gaining weight and I feel extremely satisfied with Purina Lamb and Rice. The only thing is my male husky is territorial with the food so I have to feed him separately and he always finishes the whole bowl. I put him outside and feed my female husky, and Labrador together.
It is kind of expensive, but the fact they eat more and don't poop as much sold me. I had to give my experience. My cat has been eating Purina one for 2 months. I was looking for the Purina web page and this came up. Thanks.

I am with heavy heart as I write this. Our 2 large dogs, 7 puppies, and 1 6-month-old dog have all been eating Purina One and Purina Puppy Dog chow. This week, one of the large dogs got very sick. Yesterday her puppies got sick and we lost 3 of them today. My 6-month-old dachshund got up in the middle of the night sick. I am so upset with the thought that all of the precious dogs are sick because we thought that Purina was the best for them. I am angry and sad that we may have given them something that hurt them. The one large dog that ate a different kind of food is the only one that isn't sick.
This is enough to make anyone sick. My heart goes out to all of you. This is why I have chosen Life's Abundance Pet Foods for all of my pets. The vet tells me there are as healthy and energized as if they were still puppies. Now I represent Life's Abundance pet foods. Take the time to read the labels as to what is in it. And where they originate from. Don't be fooled by the packaging. I believe that if the ingredients don't sound like human choices of ingredients that you could eat then you have to ask yourself, if I wouldn't eat it, then why would I feed it to my best friend. ReplyDeletePurina One Smartblend - we tried for my dog this week, never has he eaten this brand in his life. Well this shit pretty much KO'd his ass. He's very low energy, lethargic, doesn't want or CANT seem to walk, appears to have a pain in his rear and legs, he wouldn't even eat a treat last night - I've NEVER seen THAT! Anyways I'm about to call this company and give them the business. It disgusts me that -having already received multiple calls about their product - they did not take any action whatsoever. If anyone is interested in taking this matter further my email is jonesyo@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWhen I say further I mean not just blogging about it, but getting a lawyer involved.

Bought 2 "Purina One" dry cat food bags at Target last week. One Adult Salmon and Tune, One Healthy Kitten Formula. Both were sealed, and upon opening them are completely infested with bugs inside. I'm done with this company, especially reading about all these horror stories.
ReplyDeleteI too switched to Life's Abundance but now my dog smelled it and walked away! What is going on??
